What is Civil Engineering?

Civil Engineering:

Definition of Engineering: Engineering is the knowledge that combines science, mathematics, and economics and solves the technical problems of our people & society.  engineering is literally derived from the engine In Latin, it means creativity and creation. Engineering has many branches the six majors are: 1-Mechanical, 2-Chemical, 3-Civil, 4-Electrical, 5- Industrial, 6-Geotechnical, and there are more subcategories of engineering under each branch. Here we will only discuss Civil Engineering.

 What is Civil Engineering?

Civil engineering is a broadest, professional, & oldest engineering discipline that deals with the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including public works such as roads, bridges, canals, dams, airports, sewerage systems, pipelines, structural components of buildings, railways…etc.

Civil engineering improves the quality of life of humanity through the provision of infrastructure, This may include but is not limited to Buildings, bridges, Highways, Dams and levees, Water treatment, and waste disposal plants.

Civil Engineering Branches: Civil Engineering has many branches below some examples will discuss.

1-  Construction Engineering: Construction Engineering is a specific branch of physical environmental civil Engineering that deals with planning, design, construction, and maintenance of structures.

2-  Transportation Engineering: Transportation Engineering is a specific branch of physical environmental Civil Engineering Deals with planning, construction, and management of transportation facilities like (Road, Highways, Railways…etc).

3-     Irrigation Engineering: Irrigation Engineering is a branch of natural environmental Civil Engineering that deals with planning design and construction of human water resources (Stream, Channels, Dams, Seas, retaining wall, Culverts…etc)

4-     Hydraulic: Hydraulic Engineering is a branch of natural environment Civil Engineering that deals with Planning design and construction of hydraulic structures like dams, canals, water distribution system…etc.

5-     Structural Engineering: Structure Engineering is a branch of physical environment Civil Engineering Deals with the Design & Analysis of structures.

6-     Surveying: Surveying Engineering Deals with surveying and leveling of lands using various instruments, mapping & contouring of terrains…etc.

7-     Municipal Engineering: Municipal Engineering is a breach of physical environmental civil engineering that Deals with urban/city planning & management…etc.

8-     Environmental Engineering: Environmental Engineering focuses on improving and finding new ways to protect our environment.

9-     Geotechnical Engineering: Geotechnical Engineering Study of soil, foundations, bearing capacity…etc.
